For the second year in a row we are pleased to announce that the
United Way of Salem County has be selected to host the Big Read.
What is The Big Read?
The Big
Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts
designed to restore reading to the center of American culture.
The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute
of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts
Midwest.
So when was the last time you
read the great Sci-Fi Classic, Fahrenheit 451? Have
you ever read it? Here's your chance to explore this
book that deals with the issues of censorship, technology, and
knowledge.
You can celebrate with us by reading Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451
during our month-long
celebration in October 2008. During The Big Read, there will be art and writing competitions, gallery
exhibits, luncheons, movie nights and panel discussions. Please support
The Big Read by reading the book and participating in the activities!

NEA Big Read 2007
For
our first Big Read Program we selected "To Kill a Mockingbird"
by Harper Lee. We hosted a events ranging from movie screenings,
coffee house readings, readers theater, live music just to name
a few.
One
of the highlights of our program was the closing event where
Charles Shields (Harper Lee's Biographer and Author of the Book
"Mockingbird") gave us an insight on not only the author of "To
Kill a Mockingbird" but also an insight on how the book came
into existence. Also, he informed us that Harper Lee has written
a second book, but it is locked away in a safety deposit book
and will not be published until after her death.
This
was just one of many great events that we had last year. We hope
that you will join us and participate in this year's program by
reading the book and coming out to the different events. We are
looking forward to seeing there and as always feel free to
contact us if you have any questions.
